"My Friends and the Sun" EP

Most of us will never know what it feels like to be mauled by a wild animal. Nor will we experience the evisceration of our own flesh through catastrophe in any form. These unspeakable sufferings, we believe, are meant for explorers, globetrotters and wayfarers of the exotic ilk. But Rolodex your memory through life’s intimate encounters—those partnerships that ended in verbal sparring, deception, and blatant betrayal—and the sense memory kicks in. You’ve been eaten alive before. You’ve been in love.

But let us not be marred by memories of departure, preaches Casey Trela (aka Hi Ho Silver Oh), on his six-track EP “My Friends and the Sun.” For Trela is familiar with the dualistic clash of human connections, his resonant timbre conveying a weathered spirit far beyond his tender age (Trela is 22). His heart has done handstands across Carolina fields, his eyes have seen unspeakable visions on winter mornings, and he has fought for the affections of his woman—and lost.

And it is at this precise point of departure where Trela transcends cliché. For his songs honor heartbreak like spiritual blessings, raising them up and exposing them to the sunlight, weathered and beaten, battered and beautiful. “If you really want love,” Trela shouts on “Perjury” in a falsetto aimed at the heavens, “forget what you know.” Transforming angst into a fist to the sky, Trela’s EP is a prophet for the drowning, for the broken, for those lost in their own darkness. It embraces the fury of shattered expectations by coupling it with the realization that, in the end, the doors open, the curtains draw wide, and the sunrise shines upon us all.

The songs "I Predicted the Future" and "Pullin' Tail" are from the Chuttesville Speak recording session that happened this summer at Nightsound Studios in Carrboro. Dave Kampel was the head engineer with me following his trail, and Chris Wimberley was the wonderful man who let us record there. Mark plays bass on both these songs, and Jon plays the drums. William Randolph Brafford ran the record button and sang back-up with us on "Pullin' Tail." What a great friend.

The rest of the tunes were recorded at our Guerin St. house in Studio City California (mainly in CC's bedroom). Big thanks to Garrett, Katie, Jon, and CC for putting up with my harmony vocal takes and stealing their guitars to record with. Also thanks to Sarah "Seabass" Bassak for letting me use her beautiful acoustical Martin guitar that played so sweetly. Jon played electric guitar on tracks 1, 3, and 6, and sang back-up on tracks 3, 5, and 6.

All songs were recorded with an SM-57 microphone and a Boss BR-8 digital 8-track recorder, and were then mixed in Adobe Audition 2.0. All mysteries are now solved. Feel free to contact me with any further questions you may have.
